I have been ever so productive, and anti-productive this last week. I don't have any internet at home, so I am sitting in my second home, Tyranny of Distance. Just had spanish baked eggs for breakfast, and it is swelteringly hot outside, so all is normal.
So, this week we finally moved into our apartment. The strange thing with renting in Australia is that nowhere is furnished, unless you go into shared housing and doorms, so you have to start from scratch and get absolutely everything. So I got my own bed, cleaned scary cobwbs out of my closets, and finally moved my stuff out of my suitcase. Relief! Oh and I got a job and quit a job in the space of two days. Good going or what?! It just was not ment to be, but that does not make me feel any less flakey... But hey, next week I'll get a new job, promise ;)
Things that I have learnt about Australia so far:
· Everything is the opposite way. No joke. The key turns the wrong way in the locks, taps run the wrong water, and trying to cross the roads is just a nightmare J
· If you buy a grilled chicken, it comes with stuffing. And not just at christmas.
· Australian people are friendly! And helpful! If you ask them for directions they will all but hold your hand to get you there. Which is a nice change from Norway, where people cross the road if you try to ask them about something.
· Mate mate! People rally do say mate a lot. And you are not australian unless you have a huge bbq, or preferably two. One charcoal and one electric. And snags are sausages, to be eaten in a slice of white bread with caramelized oniones. Yum!
· If people are moving, or dont want some of their stuff here, they will just leave things on the sidewalk outside their house, and people just take it if they want it. I found a hoover the other day and got relly excited, until I realized it had its lead cut of and no mouthpiece. Doh!
· Parrots actualy just fly around here, and coccatoos or something like that. Big pretty exotic birds fly around your head all day, and I didn’t even notice the last time I was here. And there are lemon trees, palm trees, christmas trees, beautiful flowery trees and everything! Its like a mix of all the best aspects of the world, with a few snakes, spiders, sharks and deadly jellyfish thrown into the mix.
· Food. They do good food, great breakfasts, and the best coffees.
The area we have moved to is called St.Kilda East. Its just a short walk through a park and we are on chapel street, which is pretty much where we are most days. Its two tram stops to St.Kilda beach, which is a nice place to og chill and have an ice coffee, and look at all the backpacker scum thats hanging around. Fun! Our neighbourhood is very alternative – hipster – tattoo – ish, and it makes me and Sara feel like we are the most A4 people in the world, no undercuts or anything... :D
